Xbox and PS5 fans push worst Fallout game past 17 million players

It has been an important year for Bethesda, as the studio finally gave Xbox players its biggest game yet, Starfield. Tackling the stars rather than the mythic fantasy of Skyrim, Starfield marked a new step forward. However, some Xbox and PS5 players are taking a few steps back, as Fallout 76 celebrates a fresh milestone. Even if it was once dubbed the worst game in the franchise by fans.

Yes, Fallout 76 is on the up and up, as Bethesda confirms that the game is surpassing 17 million players. Reflecting on the year ahead, Bethesda says in a new statement that “just last month, we celebrated our fifth anniversary […] together, 17 million players have experienced new Fallout tales and characters with Wastelanders.” With so many keen Fallout fans exploring the desolate remains of the United States, you could be convinced it one of the best RPG games around on Xbox and PS5 right now.

Though, we understand why you be might hasty when it comes to Fallout 76. The game famously launched in a state of disrepair, with hundreds of bugs hindering the experience. Oh, and we’re sure you all remember the Fallout 76 Power Armor Edition fiasco? We’re still longing for our premium quality rucksack. Fallout 76 reviews on launch, like the one from our friends at PCGamesN, awarded scores that barely made it over the 5/10 marker.

Well, the game has come a long way since then. It isn’t perfect by any means (EG locking private games behind a paywall) but with multiple expansions to keep the story going, there is plenty to keep you busy in Fallout 76. Available via backwards capability on current generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Bethesda is eyeing up multiple additions to the game in the new year.

And there’s more to come, as Bethesda explains that “arriving in Spring 2024, the second installment, [is] Atlantic City – America’s Playground.” This new update will bring a fresh mission that includes “the legendary Jersey Devil, along with new story driven quests, more areas to explore and, of course, plenty of rewards.” Furthermore, the map itself is getting expanded far beyond the eye can see.

“Later in 2024, we’re expanding our map southward, deep into the wooded heartland of Shenandoah. This uncharted, once-tranquil expanse in the heart of Virginia will bring a new questline, factions and rewards,” Bethesda expresses. It is enough to become one of the best PS5 games around? Well, probably not, but if you are thinking of giving Fallout 76 a spin, now is the ideal time to see what improvements have been made to the ambitious-yet-flawed Bethesda RPG.
