“How to Get Plastic Out of Your Diet,” a free presentation by Suzanne Frazer, will take place at the J. Walter Cameron Center in Wailuku at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Frazer will present information on plastic chemicals in daily life and in the ocean, and the impacts of these chemicals on human health. This talk is designed to inspire and empower people to make simple changes to their lifestyles to protect their health and that of our ocean planet.

Frazer is a co-founder of Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii, an award-winning nonprofit which brings awareness and solutions to plastic marine debris.

Singer songwriter at Akaku salon

“Story Telling, Song Writing and Performance” with Karrie O’Neill is a free Akaku showcase to cap off the last salon for the Spring 2020 season at Akaku Maui Community Media at 6 p.m. Thursday.

O’Neill is based out of Spokane, Wash., and has been playing various locations on Maui. She will share her story of songwriting and her journey performing her own music, to inspire others to write and sing. She will also perform as part of her presentation.

MEO names 2019 Driver of the Year

MEO awarded its 2019 Driver of the Year Award to Marvin DeCastro. This award is sponsored and presented annually by Atlas Insurance.

DeCastro has been with the company since 2007 and also received the “Cash for No Crash” award, which is given to drivers who are not involved in any accidents during the calendar year. DeCastro has never had an accident in the 12 years since working for Maui Economic Opportunity.

Coronavirus subject of lunch presentation

“Clarifying the Reality: Coronavirus” is the title of a free Brown Bag Lunch presentation from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at J. Walter Cameron Center auditorium in Wailuku. Dr. Adam Coles will lead a discussion about the helpful (and not helpful) ways to prepare for a possible outbreak in Hawaii and provide insight to the risks and dangers related to the coronavirus.

Coles is a child psychiatrist with the State of Hawaii Health and Child Adolescent Mental Health Division, clinical director of the Maui Family Guidance Center, and co-chair of the Prevent Suicide Maui County Task Force. He is a member of the Board of Directors for Mental Health America of Hawaii and chair of the Maui Advisory Board.

Two-day rummage sale at St. John’s

St. John’s Episcopal Church in Keokea will have its annual rummage and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and March 14 in the church parish hall.

Sale items include clothing, small appliances, household items and toys at reasonable prices. Also for purchase will be many homemade baked goods, coffee and tea. Shoppers are asked to bring their own bags.

Clearance prices will be in effect from 1 to 3 p.m. March 14.

Proceeds will help the 120-year-old church continue its programs and maintenance.

A playground will be open for children (supervision not provided).

To donate items for the sale (pickup may be arranged), call 878-1485 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Adult instructor training at UH-MC

Free disaster preparedness adult instructor training will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 16 and 17 at University of Hawaii Maui College.

Maui Youth Preparedness Training adult participants will learn the basic skills needed to train youth, ages 12-18.

Six-week youth program to begin

The Ka’ehu Youth Enhancement and Mentorship Program is open for new applicants interested in participating in the next six-week program starting April 6 through May 16.

The program will run from 3 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday in Paukukalo and Waiehu.

In a previous program students gathered at Kaehu Bay and learned about conservation, stewardship, and professional opportunities available to them on Maui.

There was also water testing, marine biology, lauhala and learning about health and wellness.

Funded by the Administration for Native Americans, Ka’ehu is a nonprofit organization with the goal to restore the land and perpetuate traditional Hawaiian culture by using a community-based, inclusive, and family-oriented approach, a news release said.

Chopin’s love stories theme of recital

Internationally acclaimed pianist Damira Feldman will perform the most celebrated musical jewels written by Frederic Chopin at 7 p.m. March 14 at Wailuku Union Church.

The program is titled “Two Love Stories of Frederic Chopin.”

The concert is a collaboration of Wailuku Union Church with DFMusicMaui piano studio.

‘Being Mortal’ will screen at Kaunoa

Hospice Maui invites the community to a free screening and discussion of the PBS Frontline documentary “Being Mortal — Medicine and What Matters in the End” from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Kaunoa Senior Center in Spreckelsville.

Based on the bestselling book by Dr. Atul Gawande, the film explores the hopes of patient and families facing life-limiting illness and their relationships with the doctors, nurses and family members.

Camp Pilialoha ‘O Maui is designated for children ages 7 to 17 with a parent or parents who are currently or have been incarcerated. It serves children of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

The Ehiku Seniors Club in Kihei will present its semi-annual arts and crafts/bake/rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14. The sale will be held in the Community Room of Hale Mahalou Ehiku, 56 Ehiku St. in Kihei. There will be an array of items to browse and buy, including local crafts and snacks.

The Ehiku Seniors Club is a social and resource center for kupuna. A nonprofit organization, its provides information and resources, as well as planning low-cost social and cultural outings for kupuna.

Scholarships for LHS seniors, alumni

Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s Scholarship Committee announced that a total of $45,000 in scholarships are available to Lahainaluna High School seniors and alumni for the 2020-21 school year.

Scholarship amounts of $2,000 and $2,500 and will be awarded to qualifying seniors who will graduate from Lahainaluna High School in 2020.

Eligibility requirements include being accepted into an accredited two- or four-year college, or university, as well as writing an essay.

Additionally, full-time students currently enrolled in college or university in 2020 will be eligible for similar awards of amounts between $2,000 and $5,000. These students must be alumni of Lahainaluna High School.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui will be the beneficiary of a car wash from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Ohana Fuels, 85 S. Wakea Ave. in Kahului. The cost is $10. Proceeds will support the organization’s one-to-one mentorship programs.

BBBS of Maui is also the beneficiary of Ohana Fuels’ “Fuel Up. Do Good” program until the end of March. When motorists fill their gas tank at any Ohana Fuels location, a portion of each gallon sold will help fuel the potential of Maui’s youth.
